Fostering Faith & Community
The McGrath Institute
and Iskali Partnership
In 2022, the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame received a $1.5 million grant from the Lilly Endowment to strengthen Hispanic Catholic communities and build cultures of affiliation at the parish level.
Partnering with Iskali, the Institute is serving Hispanic Catholic young adults in 12 U.S. parishes. This collaboration blends McGrath’s expertise in faith formation with Iskali’s hands-on approach to one-on-one accompaniment, addressing the unique needs of first, second, and third generation Hispanics. Together, they are creating a culture of co-responsibility in congregations, offering young adults solid Catholic formation and pastoral care tailored to their cultural realities.
This partnership is already closing the gap in resources and ministries for Hispanic young adults, a group that makes up 50% of the U.S. Catholic Church but has often been underserved.
Iskali chosen as partner in Boston College’s Nuevo Momento Initiative
Through this collaboration, Iskali will gain access to vital resources, leadership development programs, and financial support to strengthen its ministry.
The initiative, backed by a grant from Lilly Endowment, is designed to help Iskali build a sustainable organizational infrastructure while providing advanced training for its leaders. For Iskali, this partnership means greater opportunities for faith formation, leadership development, and community engagement, all tailored to their unique cultural and spiritual needs.
As part of the Nuevo Momento initiative, Iskali will be able to deepen its impact, equipping Latino young adults with the tools to lead, thrive, and make meaningful contributions to both the Church and society.
Partnership to promote graduate theological education
Iskali and Institute of Pastoral Studies, have a strategic partnership to promote student from the Latino community to pursue graduates studies in theology and ministry. Iskali is currently supporting and working together with IPS leadership to find ways to to increase the number of students we support.
Santa Clara University
Pope Francis Institute for Pastoral Flourishing, we found strong resonance between our missions and way of approaching ministry. JST-SCU’s vision for pastoral flourishing, openness to listen and build together, investments in ministry pathways and leadership for those on the margins, and commitment to Latino and Hispanic ministries and youth leadership is a persuasive vision. We partner with Santa Clara with our missionary program, making our program available for parishes in California.
University of Notre Dame Theology Department
Through the department’s New Horizons: Educating and Forming Tomorrow’s Catholic Leaders initiative, led by Fr. Kevin Grove, C.S.C., an associate professor of theology, Notre Dame seeks to establish a sustainable, collaborative effort to mentor and support emerging Catholic leaders.
Over the next five years, the program plans to support 24 students entering the MA program and 20 entering the M.Div. program, as well as guiding 100 other individuals through the church leadership discernment process.
In doing so, the program aims to enhance support structures, provide clearer pathways for study, and alleviate financial barriers, particularly for promising leaders in underserved communities and mission dioceses. Program leaders hope that this new model will create an opportunity to reshape ministry formation at Notre Dame well beyond the five-year funding period.
The New Horizons program plans to target highly committed young adult leaders embedded in communities that represent potential future growth for the Church, including through outreach partnerships with the Catholic Extension Society; the Fellowship of Catholic University Students(FOCUS) and Iskali, dioceses and programs served by Notre Dame’s McGrath Institute for Church Life.
